Ever heard of the Notebook of Doom? In this amazing series by Troy Cummings, wonderfully illustrated characters go through a process of wacky events. Mr. Cummings very kindly flew all the way out to California for the first time, just to present to our school! The elementary team got the opportunity to interview him about his Notebook of Doom series, and all of his other books. He was giving a seminar about becoming an author, so we asked him what his favorite part of writing books is.

He replied that “Writing is like solving a puzzle. When it clicks and it works-that’s the best part.” Wondering how long it takes to write a book?

Cummings said that ” My part takes 3 months for the writing. But the pictures and editing can take years.” Writing books is hard, but there are ways to overcome those challenges.

Troy Cummings advises that “When I’m

stuck on one book, I work on my other books. So writing multiple books at once helps me.” Inspiration is everywhere, but sometimes it’s hiding. Troy Cummings told us that he travels around the world to get new inspiration for books. Turns out, that inspiration really helps, because he has written 34 books! Ever since he was little, Troy loved to draw monsters. When he grew up, he realized he wanted to be an author.

“Writing and illustrating are like the same thing to me. Drawings can take place of words.” Troy Cummings wants everyone to know that they can do it if they put their mind to it.
