Happy New Year! Little do many people know, January is a month full of many holidays and fun facts that make starting the new year even better. The most iconic holiday and celebration is New Year’s Eve and Day in which we celebrate entering a new year, in this case, being 2019. Here are some of the holidays and unique facts about January!

  1. January was named after the Roman god, Janus, who was believed to be able to see into the upcoming year and back into the previous year since he had two faces.
  2. January is a national month for many things, including National Book month, National Thank You month, National Soup month, and more.
  3. In the Southern Hemisphere, January is the equivalent of July, which for the Northern Hemisphere, is a summer month.
  4. Capricorn and Aquarius are the Zodiac signs that appear in January.
  5. January’s birthstone is Garnet for those Zodiac signs.
  6. The Saxons occasionally called January “Wulfmonath” because wolves would come to their towns searching for food.
  7. January is both the closest and furthest to December 31st.
  8. Birth flowers for this month are Carnations and Snowdrops.
  9. For a long time in European history, New Year’s day was held in March.
  10. Sadly, January is the month that most couples get divorces.

To end on a happier tone, January is the beginning of the new year which many believe is a time to make resolutions and improve yourself. So get out a notebook and create some resolutions for yourself to work on in 2019!
